Approach

My teaching philosophy is to develop strong drawing foundations through diverse exercises.  This includes training the eye to see gradations on objects and shadows, hard and soft edges, negative and positive shapes to name a few, along with mastering basic hand eye coordination drawing skills.  I stress the importance of process and perseverance.  Mastering technical skills in rendering is an important tool.  The students learn to see what is in front of them and combine it selectively with what they process.

Equipped with these skills, students feel more confident and comfortable with their own unique creations and are better enabled to express themselves.  Usually I begin each class discussing the area of focus and the goals of the exercises and how they are to be explored.  I spend much time one on one with each student, discussing process to clarify my points.  This way I become acquainted with who the individual is, their background history, their personal goals, their self-esteem, their skill level and I try and work towards my own goal of bringing out the most in them.  Through various exercises and studies, I provide a supportive stimulating environment in which they flourish.  The results are enormously gratifying.

These students are from my first year Observational Figure class at Ringling College of Art and Design fall 2010.

The galaxy above is appropriate for these unique individuals are all shining stars.
